Types of Printers

Laser Printer

A laser printer rapidly produces high quality text and graphics on a regular piece of computer paper, and it is the most common computer printer used today.  Laser printers can vary in speed with some of the fastest models being able to print over 12,000 pages per hour. A laser beam projects an image onto an electrically charged rotating drum.  Photoconductivity removes charges from certain areas that are exposed to light, and then dry ink particles are electrostatically attracted by the drum's charged areas.  The drum then prints the image onto paper by using direct heat and contact fusing the ink to the paper.

Ink jet printers are the most common type of printers used by the general consumer due to their low cost, high quality printing, and capability of printing in different colors. There are three different types of inkjets used; Piezoelectric inkjets, Continuous ink Jet, and thermal ink jet.

Solid Ink Printer

Solid ink printers are also known as phase change printers can produce excellent results. They are a type of thermal transfer printer that uses solid sticks of colored ink that are very similar to candle wax. The sticks of ink are melted and fed into a crystal operated print head, which sprays the ink on the rotating oil coated drum. The paper passes over the drum, and the image is transferred to the paper.

Solid ink printers are most commonly used as color office printers, and the are very good at printing transparencies. The process and operating coasts are very similar to laser printers, and draw backs of the printer are high power consumption and long warm up times. Xerox is the only manufacturer that currently produces Solid ink printers.

Dye Sublimation Printer

A dye Sublimation printer is a printer that uses a printing process of heat to transfer dye to a medium plastic, paper or canvas. The process is usually done to lay one color at a time using a ribbon that has color panels. Dye sub printers are intended primarily for high quality color applications, including color photography, and the are less well suited for text documents. Today they are being increasingly used as dedicated consumer photo printers.

Thermal Printer

Thermal printers work by selectively heating regions of special heat sensitive paper. Monochrome thermal printers are used in cash registers, ATMs, gasoline dispensers and some older inexpensive fax machines. The color on the paper can be achieved with special papers and different heating temperatures.

Dot Matrix Printer

A Dot matrix printer is an impact printer that produces text and graphics when tiny wire pins one a print head strike a ink ribbon. The print head runs back and forth on the paper like a type writer. The print head runs back and forth on the paper like a typewriter, and when the ink ribbon is pressed on the paper it creates dots that form the text and images. The higher number of pins means that the printer prints more dots per character resulting in a higher quality print. These printers were very popular in the 1970s ad 1980s, however the were gradually replaced by inkjet printers in the 1990s. Today they are only used in some point of scale terminals, or businesses where printing of carbon copy multi part forms of data logging are needed.

Doing work in a dorm room prevents having to go to computer labs.

Some may enjoy a printer that is more geared to do one thing as opposed to another.  If you plan on making a lot of picture through your printer then a printer more geared to that would be a great idea.  If you are more into an all purpose printer you still have many options.  Many college kids could use a great all around all purpose printer so that they can get all of their projects and work printed out and looking sharp to turn in.  Getting a good printed copy of your works will make sure that your work is turned in looking good and professional.  Keeping things presentable is important as your many classes may require different things from you.  Some may be more laid back where you can get away with smeared ink and printer quality problems.  Others may demand the highest quality and the very best from you and anything less will be unacceptable.  Getting good grades in some of these classes requires that you have access to good quality resources and an all around printer could take care of this.  Laser ink jet printers could also be used here as they work well at printing and provide a sharp picture with detailed letters.  Make your projects look the best that they can with a good printer.  Having a printer in college is not a mandatory thing as many kids do not own their own printer.  They instead use the colleges labs and resources which is no big deal and a smart idea for most.  The only problem is when crunch time is on and the labs are full of students hurriedly trying to finish their projects as deadlines loom over their heads and some panic begins to set in.  This can be a crazy scene and not something that many like to deal with as they join the mad dash to get things printed out and turned in before being late.  To avoid the craziness of the computer lab using a home computer and printer could get you ahead of the class and have everything turned in on time so that you can walk to class and pass by the mad house that may be the computer lab at the end of the semester.  There are many printers to choose from and they can all be used for their specialties to provide great looking print jobs.
